Afternoon Off

A few weeks ago, I finished up work early on a Friday afternoon. I love a Friday when things are actually done and you can leave- no strings attached. It doesn't happen that often in medicine.
So I headed home to play with my girl.  We ate our post-nap snack of popcorn, played in the snow- including toboggan riding around the yard- and drank hot chocolate. I was pretty tired afterwards- dragging a toboggan on flat land is harder than it looks. Or I'm out of shape. I'll go with the first excuse.

Favorite afternoon snack.

Good little mama, shares her popcorn.
What are you dragging me on?

The girls playing in the yard.

The Chinese finger-wagging. You do not want to be on the other end of this.

Is that a smile in the snow?!

... and I'm done.
Mmm... warm snacks.

March.

In like a lion, out like a lamb.

I think we'll go with "Beware the ides of March". Or actually "Beware, March".

It seems like winter will not let Minnesota out of its icy grip. We've been well below average temperatures and received quite a bit of snow. We even dipped into the negatives with windchill last week. Oh winter, how I detest thee.

However, our little family has made the best of it and tried to get ready for spring.  Or trying to fake that spring is coming.

But if I'm hiding Easter eggs in the snow, I might go crazy.

Like Daddy, Maddy loves a good fleece.

Is that a water table? Nope, just dog bowls.

Typical night in our house.

Gearing up for the St. Patrick's Day Parade...

You call this a parade? We do a better job in the basement.
Agreed.

Turning into a green monster thanks to Nonnie's shamrock suckers.

Kisses, anyone?

Darn good sucker.

Daddy went skiing without me and all he brought me was this onesie.  Next time, he takes me! (And Mom!)

Welcome to Year of the Snake!

Lunar New Year was February 10th. We celebrated with another Chinese adoptive family a few nights beforehand (multiple call schedules had to be considered in this planning).  The house was decorated and I tried my hand at dumplings and fried rice. Maddy agreed to wear her traditional Chinese silk. Unfortunately, we forgot to take pictures of our little CNY party and our beautiful girl in her silks.  Thank goodness I bought a silk dress in every size so she will have one for next year. Yes, this is my shopping justification.

On actual Chinese New Year, Maddy did not agree to wear her silk dress. In fact, she refused pants that day. I hope it's the only new year she celebrates sans pants otherwise her dad and I have a lot to worry about.

But in the spirit of our Chinese girl- may your Year of the Snake be joyful in a pant-free kind of way.

Eating dumplings- one of the few Chinese foods she likes. And like it she does- whole dumplings in the mouth.
Painting our ferocious dragons!

Little crafter loves to paint. Especially when she squish the paint between her fingers.

Rawr!!!

Nonnie & Poppi Come To Visit

Nonnie and Poppi.

This phrase means wonderful-ness to me. (And my siblings and my cousins). We had a pretty great pair of grandparents. Immigrant Italians who worked hard, cooked harder and loved the hardest. A couple who, when they were cooking pasta or sitting in the garden, you wouldn't guess met after an (illegal) booze delivery, went to a dance hall and eloped. Did I mention she was barely 16  and he was 26?  I see a best-selling novel here, Ana...

Nonnie was called such because Nonna is Italian for grandma. Poppi- well, Nono is Italian for grandpa. But when my oldest cousin, Scott, came along, my aunt and uncle thought Nono and "No-no" as in "knives are a No-no" would be confusing (thankfully, Scott turned out smarter than they were apparently anticipating). And my dad and his brothers grew up calling their father "Pop" so my grandfather became "Poppi".

*** Addendum: This was my understanding of the story. I have learned new details from my Aunt Jill. Apparently, Poppi himself was concerned about the No-no connotation and opted for a different name. He was initially going to go with Papa but realized this is what Italians call the Pope. I assume he didn't want to step on the Holy Father's toes. So he decided on Poppi, even before Scott was born, which belies the true excitement he had for his future grandchildren.
I am learning new things from my Aunt Jill all the time- her real name, the origin of our grandparents nicknames. What next?! She is a bevy of information!***

We lost Poppi in 1987 but Nonnie just passed away in October as we were leaving Hong Kong to return home with Maddy. She would have been 96 on March 3. Our family was blessed to have her for so long.

Thankfully, there was a new Nonnie and Poppi ready to step into the roles. Again, lots of cooking involved (as you can see) and just as many hugs.  No illegal booze in their meeting that I'm aware of- although they may be saving that part of the story- they did meet in northern California after all.

Nonnie & Poppi braved the cold Minnesota winter to come visit their first grandchild. I told my dad that it will help him appreciate his upcoming warm weather vacation to which he answered "heck, this makes me appreciate Kansas!". I'm not sure if they will ever come in the winter again but we are sure glad they toughed it out this time!
"Let me help you unpack, Nonnie"
Helping with the meatloaf.

Toys & candy? These two are ok!
In Nonnie's baby towel with Nonnie!

Rice krispie treats are num-num!
"Do the rice krispie treats need more chocolate?"
"Can't I just eat them now?"

Clearly, a costume change was called for.

Cinnamon rolls require a full chefs hat, don't you agree?

Poppi is so silly.

Delicious dinner compliments of Chris and Poppi!

5 Months

Today is the 5 month anniversary of our Gotcha Day.

5 months and 1 day ago, we wondered what life would be like with Maddy. Today, we can't imagine life without her.

Maddy is a happy, silly girl. She has a bit of an attitude at times and isn't afraid to read Mom & Dad the riot act to which we try not to laugh. It's usually accompanied by strong hand gestures which is hysterical (wonder where she learned that...)

Our girl has grown recently. She is now fully in 18 month clothing. When we came home, I had to go buy 12 mo clothes because most things I had were 18mo or 2T. Now, I am putting those things away and making sure I have enough 18mo clothes. It's a joy to see her growing.

Her hair is growing and she will sometimes tolerate pigtails. And man, is she cute when she does.

Her language continues to progress. Maddy's favorite words are 'no','books' and of course, 'more' but she's added quite a few to her vocabulary- although some are only understandable by her mom, dad, and nanny. Others include 'pop-pop' (popcorn), 'noe' (snow) and 'Nannie' (Annie- which is both her dog and nanny). She has several others including parts of the face. She is awesome with animal sounds- a good barnyard book goes a long way with her!

Favorite foods are popcorn and penne pasta (and most things Italian which makes her Poppi very happy. He claims she's from the far-eastern part of Italy. ). She now eats vegetables and fruits. One of her favorite activities is to get a blood orange out of the fridge and try to open it just like her dad.

Favorite toys include her baby Lucy (thanks O'Maras!) and baby accessories & kitchen set and dishes (hours of fun). She loves music of all kinds and will break into dance at any moment. She & I have some awesome dance parties. And water. Oh, how she loves water. Annie's water bowl hasn't been safe since 2 days after we arrived home and she decided she was safe to walk in the house. Faucets, bowls of water, the bath, anything. This was a little girl who sobbed during bath time in China but now runs to her bubble bath, splashing and pouring water over herself the whole time.

Maddy doesn't like new places and needs some time to feel comfortable. She is intimidated by groups of people- adults and children alike. She sticks pretty close to mom & dad until she's checked the whole place out. Her attachment is going really well. Nighttime continues to be her time of increased anxiety or distress but she has really let her walls down in the last month, either letting me rock her to sleep or actually just falling asleep after a few minutes. She sleeps well through the night * most * of the time but about once a week has a nightmare that needs cuddling and comforting. Night terrors are a thing of the past.

We are amazed at how much she understands. She can follow 2 part commands, has mastered puzzles and can handle Chris's ipad like a pro. We can be talking, hear the theme song for Jake and the Neverland Pirates game and there she is with the game open playing the instrument game. She already has more technical aptitude than her mom!

I did this mostly for my own memory. I don't want to forget a moment of how wonderful she is at this point in time. (Ok, maybe a few moments like when she spit a mouthful of liquified meat into my lap because she was tired of chewing it. That, I could forget.).

We love you, daughter.

Wintertime Zoo

After reading my last post, you would think we avoid going outside for 6 months of the year. No, actually, I've learned to appreciate weather in the 20s and 30s and seize those days as an opportunity for an outdoor outing.  Because let's face it, a 30 degree day in February is a gift.

This led to a Roark family zoo adventure. Like most things in Minnesota, the zoo does not close up shop in winter. People just dress warmer for the outdoor exhibits and prepare for the crowded Tropical Trail.

Maddy's initial reaction to the zoo was "what are you people dragging me to?" However, when she realized she could see animals and run and play, things got better. However, the best attraction of the day was the puddle just outside the entrance. Spring should be fun. And by fun, I mean muddy.

We drove out here to play in puddles?

Let sleeping bears lie.

"See the bears sleeping, Mom? That's what we should be doing. "

"I don't actually want to touch anything, Dad. But thanks for showing me."

Starfish pond. She was actually only interested in the bubbles.

Not too impressed.

"Please don't forget my stuff".

Camel + snow = Minnesota Zoo

The monorail ride allowed us to see everything from climate controlled comfort.

Puddles are AWESOME!

Ok, let's hit the road.
