Wintertime Zoo

After reading my last post, you would think we avoid going outside for 6 months of the year. No, actually, I've learned to appreciate weather in the 20s and 30s and seize those days as an opportunity for an outdoor outing.  Because let's face it, a 30 degree day in February is a gift.

This led to a Roark family zoo adventure. Like most things in Minnesota, the zoo does not close up shop in winter. People just dress warmer for the outdoor exhibits and prepare for the crowded Tropical Trail.

Maddy's initial reaction to the zoo was "what are you people dragging me to?" However, when she realized she could see animals and run and play, things got better. However, the best attraction of the day was the puddle just outside the entrance. Spring should be fun. And by fun, I mean muddy.

We drove out here to play in puddles? 

Let sleeping bears lie. 

"See the bears sleeping, Mom? That's what we should be doing. "

"I don't actually want to touch anything, Dad. But thanks for showing me."

Ok, let's hit the road. 

The Mall.

I mean The Mall.

Most Minnesotans I've met have give off a disdain for the Mall of America. It's like that big gaudy attraction that no one wants to admit they go to.

Well, I love the MOA. And I hate cold weather. Obviously, I'm not a Minnesotan.

Here's my thoughts: the indoor shopping mall was invented in Minnesota (the first one is located not far from where I'm sitting) because this state is freezing. I'm not exaggerating- it is currently 4 degrees and there's been snow on the ground since December.  This is just a normal February day- or actually sub-normal since the averages say there should be more snow on the ground. In those conditions, does anyone want to walk around shopping outside? But would you want to shop, eat and walk in a climate controlled environment that may even have attractions for cabin-fever ridden children and adults alike? That's a big YES from most people and an even bigger one from this girl who once proclaimed "I will never live north of Kansas City again!".

And guess what the MOA has- all of those things above AND an aquarium. AND toddler Tuesdays. AND multiple Starbucks.

So to all the MOA haters- go stand outside in the -30 windchill. We're headed to the mall.

...we saw your sweet face for the first time. It was a regular Thursday afternoon with 10 minutes to burn. I checked the CCAI website for fun. And there was a face I recognized as much as my own.  And while Daddy and I listened to the information and looked stuff up, we knew in our hearts you were our daughter. We prayed for you that night. And around noon the next day, Chelsea at CCAI said "congratulations on your new daughter".
